One of EBJC’s top past projects, King Cotton, is available for bookings again.
A central story is the dialogue between Tammi Redman and Johnny Mars who grew up in the South on the USA when it was still segregated. They tell and sing of the road to success through poverty and racism and can inspire any audince. It’s especially pertinent for any venue or project wanting to celebrate the achievment of Barack Obama
The 2008 season finished alongside great from-the-heart hip hop performances of young men in Pucklechurch Prison in March, and a Council House performance for an international history conference. A council spokesperson wrote
“Bristol City Council used this project as an example of best practice during the Euro-Clio History Conference that was attended by over 100 teachers from 45 European countries in April 2008. The Council felt this project was a great example of Social Inclusion”.
The Colston Hall performance in November 2007 featuring trombone maestro Dennis Rollins was a sell-out success:
“Venue doesn’t review school concerts but if it did…they’d have to match King Cotton’s text book study in mixing the energy and enthusiasm of young performers with skilled musicians into one seamless product. This was probably the 4th time I’ve seen the show and each time it’s got bigger and better, now expanded with a cast of (literally) hundreds plus animations as well as the songs, dance numbers and music to more than fill the Colston stage.” (Tony Benjamin)

It’s the first Thursday of the month so it must be EBJC jam time at The Cross Hands in Fishponds - set up at 8pm - jam starts at 8.30pm. The legendary Will Grealish will be running the show and in charge of the PA. John Lambert will be on keyboards, with Jimmy and Jura on bass. As it’s the day after Bonfire Night we’re hoping for all you ‘guys’ to come down and set the place ‘alight’ with some ‘explosive’ jazz that ‘lights up’ a cold November evening (see what we’ve done there?). Alternatively come down and listen with appropriate ‘oohs and aahs’ in the right places.

Continuing the EBJC’s tradition of special events including its ‘Singers Nights’ - the jam on Thursday 2nd October at The Cross Hands in Fishponds will be a special instrumentalists night. Back to basics with no PA (though the keyboards and the bass may sneak in an amplifier!) and simply great instrumental jazz tunes.
John Lambert will be on keyboards, Jimmy on drums and Jura on bass but they’ll let you have a go if you ask nicely! Come down and listen to the music or bring your horn (or anything else) and blow.
The November Jam will be business as usual.
